PhD student 9: Combinatorial search for materials with optimized properties for thermomagnetic power generation
André Beleza
Objectives
Use sputtering to produce thin film libraries of compositionally graded thermomagnetic materials.
Study the impact of composition and preparation conditions on structural and magnetic properties using high throughput scanning characterization techniques (EDX, XRD, MOKE) supported by machine learning (WP3), together with detailed analysis (VSM-SQUID, SEM, TEM, specific heat) of select samples.
Expected Results
- Thin (< 1 μm) films of various types of thermomagnetic materials with optimized magnetic and mechanical properties, which will serve to guide the development of bulk thermomagnetic materials
- Micro-patterned thick films (1-50 μm) of optimised thermomagnetic materials for testing in micro-scaled TMG
- High performance NdFeB micro-magnets to serve as magnetic field sources in micro-scaled TMG
