About Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung

The German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) is a world-leading center of excellence for safety in technology and chemistry. Uniquely positioned at the interface of science, technology, industry and politics, BAM integrates research, assessment and consultation in material sciences, materials engineering and chemistry under one umbrella. Through providing reference materials, performing tests and issuing expert opinions, approvals and certifications, BAM is in close contact with industry and other external partners. Thereby, BAM provides a crucial contribution to the technical safety of products and processes, to the development of German and European industry and to people’s life and work environment.

Role in project

BAM coordinates the work package “Materials production and characterization”, in which an interdisciplinary team will work with industrial partners to develop optimal materials and components for a new generation of thermomagnetic demonstrators that can efficiently transfer waste heat and convert it into electrical energy. Within BAM’s own project, 3D-printed thermomagnetic materials and parts will be produced and characterized non-destructively.
