PhD student 6: X-ray imaging of thermomagnetic materials and generators
Savvina Papaioannou
Objectives
We will use 3D X-ray micro-computed tomography as a tool for a feedback loop between materials production, characterization and utilization in a thermomagnetic generator (TMG) device. This will allow for an early identification of mechanical failure and its mechanisms and will help us to select materials and composites that withstand the conditions in a demonstrator for many thousands of cycles.
Expected Results
- Production of thermomagnetic composites using a polymeric matrix and powder particles provided by partners CNR and TU Delft
- Identification of structural defects leading to failure of thermomagnetic materials in composites prepared in DC6 and materials prepared at CNR and TU
Delft - Testing of the printed composites in the HZDR demonstrators
- In-situ 3D X-ray imaging of thermomagnetic demonstrators and identification of the magnetic material’s reliability at BAM
